Esthero as Kanye’s “J.A.N.E.”

Kanye West recently wrapped up his “Glow in the Dark” Tour, which featured Esthero as the spaceship J.A.N.E. How did it all come about?

“He said he wasn’t really going to directly speak to the audience, so much as he was going to speak to this spaceship, and that it would be his only companion on this planet that he had landed on. When I asked him, ‘Who’s the voice of this spaceship?’ he sort of went blank. He was like, ‘I don’t know.’ It was one detail he’d forgotten.” [laughs]”

Wow, that’s awsome that E, my favorite Canadian artist,is the voice of Kanye’s spaceship. I was trying to figure out that whole J.A.N.E connection. Did anyone notice that Estelle and Esthero are pretty similair? not vocally, or looks, but moniker wise?..anywayz. I saw these videos of Esthero producing/recording at EMI. WTF? Are theswe new? Oboe was there and everything…Don’t take his damn food! I found like 2 new songs!…I need more info please. Also, does esthero need rehab herself?, that whole Amy Whinehouse rant on myspace has got me worried.

@ Giovanni: What were the new songs you found? Check the sidebar on the music page to see if they’re listed there. Some demos were also released via the SNOCAP store.

I think the most interesting bit of news from Karen’s article was the mention of Esthero recording songs in Vancouver (not the EMI stuff that’s on YouTube) - I’ll try to find out more on that front. As for the work at EMI, she produced a track for Dangerous Muse entitled “Too Much To Ask.”

The few new songs that I found were a “Too Rude” remix featuring Esthero on Telefon Tel Aviv myspace, a song entitled “Dragonfly” thats quite different from the dragonfly intro on her full length, “The Neverending Quest” remix with the late Lisa left-eye lopez, and “Too much to Ask” apparently recorded in Vancouver with Snoop Dog. None of these are on snopcap.

Keep us Toronto fanboys updated already!

@ Giovanni: “Too Rude” is a song by Carmen Rizzo, featuring Esthero. I haven’t been keeping track of remixes where the lead artist isn’t Esthero (otherwise I’d have about 67 DJ Krush albums listed). I wouldn’t be surprised if there are others. Same thing with the Left-Eye track - I’ve listed the album version of “The Universal Quest” in the music section.

“Too Much To Ask” was produced by Esthero for a group called Dangerous Muse. This is the first I’ve heard of Snoop’s involvement.

As for the version of Dragonfly you’ve heard, I’m going to have to ask if this isn’t simply “Dragonfly’s Outro.” Back in 2004 we had posted a clip of the demo of the song when it was titled “Dragonfly,” so there may be some confusion there.

Hit me up with an email - I’m curious about where you found these (apart from the easy-to-find Telefon Tel Aviv remix)…
